Franschhoek Wine Valley
Franschhoek Wine Valley
Wine valley in the Western Cape, Franschhoek brings together over 50 estates, the Huguenot heritage and the famous Wine Tram.
Franschhoek is a wine valley in the Western Cape, Afrique du Sud, located approximately 45 minutes' drive from Cape Town and half an hour from Stellenbosch. Known as "the Valley of the Huguenots," it brings together over 50 wine estates, a renowned food scene, and Cape Dutch architectural heritage left by French settlers who arrived in the 17th century.
Why visit Franschhoek
Franschhoek combines three compelling reasons that make it a singular destination in Afrique du Sud. First, a terroir renowned for its full-bodied reds (Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon) and Cap Classique sparkling wine crafted from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Second, a proudly French identity, visible in estate names, flags, and village architecture. Finally, a valley framed by mountains (Wemmershoek to the north, Groot Drakenstein and Franschhoek to the south) and crossed by the Berg River, offering an ideal setting for hiking and walks alongside wine tastings.
History: from Oliphantshoek to the Valley of the Huguenots
The valley was originally called Oliphantshoek in Dutch, due to the presence of elephants that descended to drink in the plains. Its modern character took shape from 1685, when the persecution of Protestants in France drove Huguenots into exile. Several families settled in the valley, which quickly earned the nickname "Valley of the Huguenots."
These refugees brought with them winemaking expertise. The first vineyards were planted in the late 1600s and gave birth to estates still active today, such as La Motte, Cabrière, and La Provence. French surnames — often displayed on farm signs — still testify to this heritage.
What to see and do
Wine estates
Over 50 estates are spread throughout the village and surrounding slopes. The region is renowned for two wine profiles: powerful reds made from Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cap Classique, traditional method sparkling wines crafted from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The diversity of soils — dominant alluvial sandstone, granite deposits on north-facing slopes — and a warm continental climate largely explain this aromatic palette.
The Franschhoek Wine Tram
The Wine Tram is the most convenient way to move between estates without renting a car. It offers 8 itineraries with multiple stops, all departing from the village, aboard vintage trams or open tram-buses. The lines operate in pairs (blue/green, purple/orange, pink/grey, red/yellow): each pair serves the same estates but in different orders. You buy a day ticket, hop off where you wish, and stay as long as you like at each stop.
The village and its heritage
The main street concentrates most restaurants, galleries, and shops. Cape Dutch architecture — white facades with sculpted gables — is well preserved, particularly around historic farms. The Huguenot Memorial Museum, at the end of the main street, traces the history of families who settled in the 17th century.

When to visit
Franschhoek is worth visiting year-round thanks to a warm continental climate with distinct seasons. The Southern Hemisphere summer (December to March) is dry and sunny: peak tourist season, culminating with harvest between February and April depending on varietals. Autumn (April-May) offers beautiful light and a valley dressed in colours. Winter (June to August) is wetter but also features lavish menus and fireside gatherings at estates, often at more favourable rates. Spring (September to November) marks the return of vegetation and remains pleasant before summer crowds arrive.
How to get there
Franschhoek lies approximately 80 km from Cape Town, about 45 minutes to 1 hour's drive via the N1 then R45. A rental car offers the most flexibility: it allows you to combine the valley with Stellenbosch (30 minutes) and Paarl (20 minutes). Without a vehicle, several operators offer day trips from Cape Town, typically including the Wine Tram. Once there, using the tram or a private driver is recommended, given strict breathalyser testing in Afrique du Sud.
What to see nearby
- Stellenbosch: Afrique du Sud's second-oldest city and another major wine destination, 30 minutes away.
- Paarl: known for its granite rock and estates, 20 minutes to the northwest.
- The Cape Peninsula: approximately 1.5 hours away, to combine vineyards and coastline.
- The Zeitz Museum in Cape Town, for cultural enrichment before or after the valley.
